THEY BELONG TOGETHER🐶❤️ This #HAPWoofWednesday we are introducing our floofy boys, Benny & Smokey!

These handsome guys came to HAP when their owner was moving and no longer able to take them. From the moment they stepped foot in the shelter, it was clear these pups were significantly undersocialized. Their first few days, they did not eat, would not go outside, and were completely shut down. For nearly a month, they would not allow any handling, cowering in the back of their kennels. Thankfully, their kennels were located directly next to a fenced field, so they were able to go outside during the day to enjoy some extra space. By hanging out with them outside, our team was able to gain their trust! They have truly come so far since then and we are hopeful that someone will be interested in adopting them together!

Benny is the more outgoing of the pair and has warmed up to a majority of our staff, often seen throwing his back end into us for butt scratches. Benny loves chasing and catching tennis balls. He is about 5 years old and Smokey is actually his biological son! Smokey can be more reserved, understandably, as his previous owner said that he had never left home before. While he can be timid, Smokey secretly loves life. Unknowingly to him, our staff has observed him tossing toys for himself and rolling in the grass on many occasions. We have separated them before and they did well, though they do love to be together and we hope someone will give them a chance to be together!

MEET OUR MR. CLEAN 🧼💙🦴As we continue to celebrate our amazing volunteers, meet one of HAP’s most dedicated volunteers, with 350+ hours on-site last year!

Matt has been volunteering with HAP for over a year, coming in to help every Monday and Thursday at HAP Wilmington. What we love most about Matt is the excitement and passion he has for helping our animals. While many folks are interested in taking our dogs outside of the kennel, Matt does the job that most volunteers fear; the deep cleaning! 💩🧹🫧

When Matt began volunteering, he noticed that we do a lot of cleaning between laundry, dishes, kennels, meet-and-greet rooms, and much more on a daily basis. He wanted to help take care of our dogs, but also help our staff with the more nitty gritty tasks. Matt quickly learned our techniques and protocols for ensuring a safe living space. Since then, he has dedicated every Monday and Thursday morning to deep cleaning kennels, washing dishes, and completing multiple loads of laundry! Matt also takes a strong interest in getting to know our dogs, providing them with toys and treats in their freshly cleaned kennels, that he knows they’ll love! With Matt’s help, we are able to tackle deep clean days as a larger team and ultimately spend more time enriching the lives of our animals! Additionally, Matt adopted his two pups, Snapps in November 2022 and Darcy in April 2023, from HAP! THANK YOU MATT🐶🐾💙

WELCOME HOME, CHARLES 🥰🎉 After 891 days, our

WELCOME HOME, CHARLES 🥰🎉 After 891 days, our longest resident found his forever home!

Charles came to HAP in 2021 from a shelter in Alabama, where he was found as a stray and at risk for euthanasia. Upon intake, he was friendly and very loving with our staff and volunteers. However, he does not like dogs or cats, which made it harder for him to find a home. As time passed, Charles grew very stressed in the shelter environment. The longer he stayed with us, Charles became reserved with new people and took some time to warm up to affection from strangers. We knew he would benefit from a foster home, where he can relax and be his true self. His foster mom, Christina, provided him with enrichment, exercise, socialization, and most importantly, love!

After 2.5 years, Charles had come so far but sadly, he wasn’t receiving any interest. We had shared his story dozens of times, but still no one wanted him. Despite this, our staff remained hopeful that his person would come along and we were so happy when Jenifer reached out!

After hearing Charles’s story and reading about him on our website, Jenifer asked to meet Charles. While Charles has previously been reserved and stuck by his friends, he wiggled right up to Jenifer and looked back at our staff with a massive smile across his face. We truly had never seen him bond with a new person so quickly. Understandably, our team is very close to Charles, but his reaction to Jenifer was so clear…Charles had found his person! Before adopting, Jenifer made sure all his shelter friends could stop in to see him off! It has been a month now and here’s what Jenifer has to say about him:

“Charles has been great! He’s been to the groomer and plumped up from treats! He greets all the neighbors every day, while protecting me from the bees and squirrels. He loves to make sure I’m very warm at night. I try to take pictures of him but honestly he’s always so close to me, it’s difficult!”

Thank you, Jenifer, for giving him a chance and providing a loving home for Charles! 💙🎉🥰
